I'll be interested to know what you decide about the de Kretser. Your comments made me rethink my memories. I don't think that I will reread it but in retrospect I did feel its 'manneredness' acutely, which made reading it a rather skewedly intellectual exercise. I didn't experience many emotions apart from a similarly mannered admiration, though that in bucketloads.
